Melanie

Somewhere near the end of the electric, hard-rock era, Melanie arrived on the music scene. Suddenly here was this small, waifish, gravel-voiced singer with long dark hair and big dark eyes who was appealing to all of us to love her. Almost overnight she won a large following of rock fans, who flocked to the various music halls not only to hear her sing but also to be part of her—"Melanie's loyal legions."

Her style—she appears vulnerable, sparkling, loving—is her main asset. When she performs before an audience, often her fans will parade to the stage at the start of the concert and present her with gifts. There is silence before she begins and then out comes her childish, uneven voice—and words of love and peace:

We were meant to see the beginning of the day
I believe it was planned to lift us this way
Take you an apple and take you a song
And watch a baby day be born
Take you an apple and take you a song
Watch a baby day be born

Melanie Safka grew up in New York City and attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Now 24 years old, she is married to record producer Peter Schekeryk, who has worked on all her six albums.

As a song writer Melanie is as naïve as a schoolgirl. Yet her innocent writing and singing style serve to emphasize the sophistication of the message she is trying to get across. As much as peace might be impossible for the world right now; there is every reason to pray for it. As much as love has taken on hazier and hazier connotations, there is every reason to hope to feel the "real thing" someday. Melanie urges us to try.
